June is designated as Great Outdoors Month, and with schools letting out for summer and the delightfully warm weather, there’s no better time to enjoy some outdoor summer activities. Luckily, we have plenty to do right around Farmville. Here are just a few ways to get outside and experience the natural beauty of the heart of Virginia.
Combining history and outdoor recreation, the High Bridge Trail State Park is a former railroad that has been converted to a 31 mile long hiking/biking trail. Accessing the trail is easy with entrances on Main Street, which is 4.5 miles from the bridge, and on Camp Paradise Road, which is .3 miles from the bridge. Whether hiking or biking, the scenery along the trail and the breathtaking view from the bridge are well worth a visit. The park is open for visitors from dawn to dusk.
Interested in a more unique outdoor getaway experience? Look no further than Sandy River Outdoor Adventures. Located just 6 miles from downtown Farmville, Sandy River features Virginia’s largest zipline/aerial adventure park, with 20 ziplines and 60 obstacles. But if being in the trees isn't for you, there are boat rentals available for access to the quaint Sandy River reservoir and Appomattox River. Sandy River also features comfortable log cabins and new luxury glamping tipis to give guests a new take on camping. Looking for more activities on the water to beat the heat? Wilck’s Lake has you covered. Located right outside of downtown Farmville on West Third Street, Wilck’s Lake allows fishing and all kinds of paddle craft out in the water. A hiking trail wraps around the lake offering fantastic views of the forest and local wildlife. Right on the shore there is a park where pick-up soccer matches and other sports are usually taking place and playground equipment is available. Next to the parking lot is the Skateboard Park that provides a fun and safe place to skate. Overall, Wilck’s Lake has something to offer all visitors. The park is open year round from dawn until dusk. For additional information, or to rent out space in the park, contact Kim Thompson at (434)-392-8465.
