When you think of Farmville, Virginia you might picture Green Front Furniture storefronts, Longwood University or Hampden-Sydney College, or the High Bridge Trail. Now picture this: you are eating at a local restaurant on a warm summer afternoon; after your meal you know you’re not ready to go home and as you head through town you hear the echo of live music coming from the direction of 3rd Street. As you make your way toward the sound you hear laughter, see inviting green grass filled with shady umbrellas and outdoor tables, fun lawn games are scattered around, a live band plays, and more importantly people are holding glasses of fresh cold 3rd Street Brewing IPAs.
In a market full of mass-produced light beers 3rd Street Brewing, LLC, is bringing back the homegrown, locally sourced, small town brewery beer that people want…right here to Farmville, Virginia! “Richmond is doing some really cool things with local breweries, Charlottesville has a lot of great places, and even Lynchburg has some craft breweries that are a lot of fun. We want to make that happen here in Farmville, to create a new, fun, and relaxed place where the community can gather.” Co-founder Mark Kernohan stated. 3rd Street Brewing is going to be that place, the oasis in the middle of what he aptly described as “a beer desert.”
Formed by five men with a clear vision, Chris Sadler, Keith Rider, John Dudley, Gary Elder, and Mark Kernohan have set out to create a 7-barrel brew house and taproom. Located in Farmville’s newly renovated Prizery on Third Street and adjacent to the historic High Bridge Trail 3rd Street Brewing will be a place where the public can meet and mingle. The grounds will include spacious beer gardens fully equipped with outdoor tables with umbrellas and lawn games including bocce, massive jenga blocks, and corn hole boards. “We want to be one place where you can ride your horse up to the front door and get a beer,” Kernohan explained. All jokes aside there will be an area where horse riders who are enjoying the trail can dismount and tie their horses while they get a drink. The same will be available for bicyclists and runners on the trail as well. The level of accessibility and a welcoming atmosphere will draw crowds from Farmville and surrounding areas, which will be great for the town and for 3rd Street!
Curb appeal is a huge part of this business but what will really draw the crowds is their small but selective range of craft beers. There will be 6 stock beers and the cycling of seasonal and holiday beers available year-round. “People have the general conception that IPAs are heavy,” stated Kernohan and he’s not wrong however this brewery’s small size will allow the owners to listen to the publics input and adjust accordingly. “We are making authentic IPA’s” said Kernohan, “with different textures, a certain look, and smell.” The end goal of their labor of love is to create the best products possible. Drinking one of their beers will be just as pleasant an experience as sitting outside on the lawn with friends, family, and colleagues alike. Kernohan and his associates are hoping that 3rd Street will offer a place where “college kids can sit next to construction workers.” It will also be family and pet friendly! Live music and events will be staples on Friday and Saturday nights as well as occasional Sunday afternoons, which will be a fun addition to the growing social scene in Farmville!
The 3rd Street Brewing will ultimately be an inclusive, welcoming, craft beer experience that will embody the rich small town feeling (and even some locally sourced products) that makes Farmville so special.
The 3rd Street Brewing broke ground in 2016 and has a target opening of August 2017!
